The Russian occupation of Chechnya was marked by a number of violent uprisings. One such insurrection took place in 1877-1878,[24] when the Chechens rose up against the Russians in October 1877 and in Dagestan a month later. The rebellion was put brutally down by the Russians. Historian Jeronim Perovic outlined how Russia acted to quell the dissent: âThe Russians responded by suppressing the unrest with the utmost severity. They burned down numerous settlements, confiscated land and once again resettled large parts of the mountainous population in the plains or in the interior of the country. And once again, thousands left their homes and headed to the Ottoman Empireâ¦Thirteen of the eighteen Chechen rebels were sentenced to death by hanging.â[25]
